Breakdowns

Breakdowns are set sequences of blocks and strikes performed in reaction to attacks from an opponent. To execute these breakdowns, you tell your opponent what attack to perform and when to proceed. Both the attacker and defender should execute proper stances for these breakdowns.

From a ready stance, step back with your right foot (into a left-foot-forward front stance) and low block the punch with your left hand.

Shuffle your feet into a right-foot-forward front stance, and punch to the chest.

Kick low and punch to the chest

From a left-foot-forward front stance, front kick with your back right foot (belt level), land in a right-foot-forward front stance and punch to the chest with your right hand.

Low block, hammer block, and punch to the chest

From a ready stance, step back with your right foot (into a left-foot-forward front stance) and low block the kick with your left hand.

Move your right foot back into the left-foot-forward back stance, setup and hammer block the punch with your left hand.

Step forward into a right-foot-forward front stance, and punch to the chest.

Step forward and punch to the head

From a left-foot-forward front stance, step forward into a right-foot-forward front stance and punch to the head with your right hand.

Face block, stepforward, and elbow to the head

From a ready stance, step back with your right foot (into a left-foot-forward front stance) and face block the punch with your left hand.

Step forward into a right-foot-forward front stance, grab the back of your attacker's head with your left hand and strike with your right elbow.

Step forward and punch to the chest

From a left-foot-forward front stance, step forward into a right-foot-forward front stance and punch to the chest with your right hand.

Step back, knife hand block, and knife hand strike to the neck

From a ready stance, step back at a 45 degree angle with your right foot (into a left-foot-forward back stance) and knife hand (shoto) block the punch with your left hand.

Move your left foot forward towards your attacker (staying in a left-foot-forward back stance) and knife hand (shoto) strike to your attacker's neck with your left hand.

Step forward and punch to the chest

From a left-foot-forward front stance, step forward into a right-foot-forward front stance and punch to the chest with your right hand.

Step back, knife hand block, shuffle and knife hand strike to the neck

From a ready stance, step back at a 45 degree angle with your right foot (into a left-foot-forward back stance) and knife hand (shoto) block the punch with your left hand.

Shuffle into a right-foot-forward back stance and knife hand (shoto) strike to your attacker's neck with your right hand.

Step forward and punch to the chest

From a left-foot-forward front stance, step forward into a right-foot-forward front stance and punch to the chest with your right hand.

Block the punch, stepping into a horse stance, strike to the back with right elbow, strike to ribs with left elbow

From
a ready stance, block the punch with your left hand by pushing the attacker's elbow to the right side.

At the same time, step forward with your right foot into a horse stance, with the back of you right calf locked up against the back of your attacker's right calf.

Slide you right arm past your attacker and pull your right arm back, striking your attacker in the back with your right elbow.

Pull you left arm back, striking your attacker in the rib's with your left elbow.

Step forward and punch to the chest

From a left-foot-forward front stance, step forward into a right-foot-forward front stance and punch to the chest with your right hand.

Block the punch, stepping into a horse stance, and strike to ribs with the palm of the right hand

From a ready stance, block the punch with your left hand by pushing the attacker's elbow to the right side.

At the same time, step forward with your right foot into a horse stance, with the back of you right calf locked up against the back of your attacker's right calf.

Strike your attacker's ribs with an open right hand.

Step forward and punch to the chest

From a left-foot-forward front stance, step forward into a right-foot-forward front stance and punch to the chest with your right hand.

Be prepared for a takedown (landing on your left side as your right calf is swept from under you).

Block the punch, stepping into a horse stance, strike to chin with an open right hand, and take down your attacker

From a ready stance, block the punch with your left hand by pushing the attacker's elbow to the right side.

At the same time, step forward with your right foot into a horse stance, with the back of you right calf locked up against the back of your attacker's right calf.

Strike your attacker's chin with an open right hand to distract.

Take down your attacker by pushing on his left shoulder with your right hand and shifting left from a horse stance to a right-foot-forward side stance. As your right leg straightens, your right calf should push against your attacker's, sweeping his right leg for the takedown.

Step forward and punch to the chest

From a left-foot-forward front stance, step forward into a right-foot-forward front stance and punch to the chest with your right hand.

Block the punch, step around and side kick to the ribs, and land in a back stance with a knife hand block

From a ready stance, block the punch with your left hand by pushing the attacker's elbow to the right side.

At the same time, pivot counter-clockwise 270 degrees on your left foot by moving your right foot. As you land your right foot, side kick you attacker in the ribs with your left foot.

After landing the kick, continue rotating counter-clockwise 90 degrees (pivoting on your right foot) and land your left foot into a right-foot-forward backstance, facing your opponent with a knife hand (shoto) block.

Step forward and punch to the chest

From a left-foot-forward front stance, step forward into a right-foot-forward front stance and punch to the chest with your right hand.

Stepping back into a lady's stance, back fist block the punch.

OPEN the punching hand with your right hand, front kick to the head, punch to the head and punch to the chest.

From a ready stance, step back with both feet into a left-foot-forward lady's stance.

At the same time, setup and back fist over the top with your right hand to block the punch (do not make contact during the drill). This move is from the 3rd kata "Shi Ho Hi".

Use your right hand to "open" (push away) your attacker's punching hand to expose his body.

Front kick to the head with your right foot - as you land into a right-foot-forward front stance, punch to the head with your left fist and punch to the chest with your right fist.

Hint to remember: the first punch is to the head using opposite hand which did the "open".

At the same time, setup and back fist over the top with your right hand to block the punch (do not make contact during the drill). This move is from the 3rd kata "Shi Ho Hi".

Use your left hand to "close" (push away) your attacker's punching hand to cover his body.

Front kick to the head with your right foot - as you land into a right-foot-forward front stance, punch to the head with your right fist and punch to the chest with your left fist.

Hint to remember: the first punch is to the head using opposite hand which did the "close".

From a ready stance, turn counter-clockwise 45 degrees, pivoting on your left foot. At the same time, low block with your right arm and chamber (raise) your right leg.

Chamber your right hand to the side of your belt and side kick you attacker's ribs with your right leg. This move is from the 3rd kata "Shi Ho Hi".

Bring your right leg back (clockwise) to land in a left-foot-forward back stance, facing your attacker with a knife hand (shoto) block with your left hand.

Turn to your right and low block the punch, side kick to the ribs, and land in a back stance with a knife hand block

From a ready stance, turn clockwise 45 degrees, pivoting on your right foot. At the same time, low block with your left arm and chamber (raise) your left leg.

Chamber your left hand to the side of your belt and side kick you attacker's ribs with your left leg. This move is from the 3rd kata "Shi Ho Hi".

Bring your left leg back (counter-clockwise)to land in a right-foot-forward back stance, facing your attacker with a knife hand (shoto) block with your right hand.

Step forward and punch low

From a left-foot-forward front stance, step forward into a right-foot-forward horse stance and punch low (belt level) with your right hand.

Turn to your left, jamming your attacker, and elbow to the head

From a ready stance with your BACK to your attacker, turn clockwise 90 degrees by pivoting on your left foot. Place your right foot between your attacker's legs and use your right shoulder and arm to block his punch.

Lift your right elbow and strike to your attacker's head.

Step forward and punch low

From a left-foot-forward front stance, step forward into a right-foot-forward front stance and punch low (belt level) with your right hand.

Turn to your left, step back and hammer block, and step forward and punch to the ribs

From a ready stance with your BACK to your attacker, move your left foot forward as your rotate clockwise 90 degrees to land in a right-foot-forward back stance - you should be facing your attacker.

As you land, setup and backfist you attacker's punch with your right hand.

Step forward towards your attacker with your left foot into a left-foot-forward front stance. Simultaneously push the elbow of your attacker's punching arm to the right side with your left hand and punch with your attacker's ribs with your right fist (which passes under your left blocking hand).
